HISTORY

In late 2007, the founder members of the band, Scott Phillips, Dave Gibson, Ron Mckay and George Black, talked about Carnoustie having it’s first ever pipe band. After consulting with, and adding, a few other prominent local players. A few practices were then held with the Practical Pipers Society, a local piping group, to see if the idea of a band was feasible. The practices went very well so a steering committee was set up and in March 2008, the Carnoustie and District Pipe Band was formed.

With the help of some of the local groups, Piping and Drumming lessons commenced at the town's Burnside Primary, with the band practicing in the Panbride Church Hall on Arbroath Road.

The formation of the pipe band could not have happened without the huge support from the local community. Organisations such as the Carnoustie Gala Committee and Carnoustie Community Council, have all been of immense importance in the early days of the pipe band, and I'm sure will continue to be valuable assets.

Most importantly, none of the above could ever have happened in the time frame it did, without the band being extremely fortunate to have the backing of local businessman David Murray, of David Murray Transport Ltd, who through his generous sponsorship and everyday support of the band it was all made possible.

The band made its first public performance at Carnoustie Gala Day in 2008, and since then has made numerous other public appearances at Fetes, Ceilidhs, Festivals and a Torch Light parade. The band continues to progress and now boasts a healthy membership as well as a popular learner’s class. The band now aims to continue entertaining the local area with its music as well as progressing musically by entering both national and international competitions.

The band is lead by Pipe Major Ian Campbell. Prospective members should click on the CONTACT page as we are always on the lookout for keen pipers and drummers or anyone else who would like to become one.
