IAN CAMPBELL

I started piping in 1973 at the age of 8 years old with the Lindsey Pipe Band in Lincolnshire. Their main claim to fame was winning 1st prize at The Cowal Championships in Grade 4 ensuring a promotion to Grade 3 for the band.

In 1983, I joined the army, and became an infantryman/piper with The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. During my time with the Argylls, I completed my Senior Pipers and Piobaireachd Courses at the Army School of Piping at Edinburgh Castle.

In 1987, I transferred to become a tank crewman/piper with The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and enjoyed a very successful period, winning numerous prizes in Grade 1 major championships.

In 1990/91, I completed the Pipe Major Course at the Army School of Piping at Edinburgh Castle, gaining the Pipe Majors Certificate, Senior Teachers Certificate and Graduate Certificate in Piping.

I have travelled extensively throughout the world, operationally as well as with the Pipe Bands and have played at numerous prestigious events and displays, in particular approximately 8 Edinburgh Tattoos.

In 1996 I retired from the army and I then became Pipe Sgt of Tayside Police Pipe Band where we enjoyed some success at Grade 2 level.

Having enjoyed a break from piping for a few years, I returned in 2009 and joined Carnoustie and District Pipe Band. I was soon promoted to the role of Pipe Sgt and became a member of the committee, taking on the role as Child Protection Officer.

In September 2011, I was offered and accepted the role of Pipe Major of Carnoustie and District Pipe Band, a great honour for which I am most grateful.

I enjoy teaching the pipes and offering advice and assistance to the band as a whole and look forward to the band growing and progressing throughout the future. I am looking to continue the ethos of the band, being to teach and progress like minded individuals, interested in the Bagpipes or Drums and to promote and develop Carnoustie and District Pipe Band into a capable, competition winning, recognised band of distinction for the local area.
