Carnoustie and District Pipe Band had a great day at a piping and drumming contest organised by City of Brechin Pipe Band at Brechin High School on Saturday, when the band won 10 awards. in Brechin last weekend.
Pipe Major Ian Campbell congratulated everyone for a great day out with special thanks to City of Brechin Pipe Band for hosting a very well organised event. He was also very proud of the achievements of our own young pipers and drummers, some of whom had not been playing very long, and to see them all winning prizes in competition against other worthy competitors is fantastic, and they should all be proud of themselves. It’s also comforting to realise that we as a band are doing something right with our methods of teaching, as we are obviously getting the desired results. For All The Contest Results Click Here...

New Leading Drummer
We would also like to announce that we now have a new Leading Drummer, Dave Stewart, who takes over from our present Leading Drummer Neil Russell. Neil has done a great job for the band over the last 18 months, teaching both the young learners as well as the competing corps, and the band is very grateful for all of his efforts. Thankfully Neil is still in the corps and is helping Dave to take over the L/D roll with the minimum of disruption.

Departure of Pipe Major
We are very sorry to announce the departure of Scott Phillips as our Pipe Major, this is due to his job demands. He is one of the founding members of the band and his leaving the post will be a great loss to us all and we wish him all the best in his new employment. He will however still be able to play with the band in his new role as honorary Pipe Sgt and will assist the band as and when his employment allows

PRESS RELEASE – CARNOUSTIE & DISTRICT PIPE BAND
The Fastest Drummer in the World was in Carnoustie at the weekend to put the drummers of the Carnoustie & District Pipe Band through their paces! The band members were treated to an excellent day of top level tuition from Carl Williams of CW Percussion. Carl has been recorded in the Guiness Book of World Records as the fastest drummer and has also played with the world championship-winning Shotts and Dykehead Pipe Band. The day’s workshop was won by young drummer Amy Forbes who came first in the solo drumming competition in Brechin in September. The whole drum corps benefited from Amy’s prize, as they were treated to a very educational and inspirational day!
The leading drummer of the Carnoustie band, Neil Russell, was very enthusiastic about the day’s accomplishments and said, “This has been a very fruitful day for our young drummers. Many of them have only been learning for a short period of time and they have come on leaps and bound. Workshops like this show what can be achieved for talented youngsters like themselves with a lot of hard work and determination. Carl is an excellent teacher and very motivational, and the drummers have come away from this eager to practice and get better!”
The workshop attracted a host of other drummers and percussionists from the local area and further afield who were keen to draw on Mr. Williams’ expertise. Mr Russell continued, “I’m very impressed with the enthusiasm of all the guys and girls who participated. They are a breath of fresh air and are contributing to the successes of the Carnoustie & District Pipe Band, or whatever band they have come from to attend today”
The Carnoustie and District Pipe Band, despite only being formed in 2008, is a rapidly expanding organisation with over 30 performing members, many of whom have been taught in the popular lessons run by the band. The band is always keen to recruit new members, whether they are keen to learn to play the bagpipes or drums, or are experienced players. The lessons are on Monday evening’s at Burnside Primary School, Carnoustie at 7pm, and the band practices on Wednesday evenings at Newton Panbride Church, Carnoustie, also at 7pm. Anyone who is interested can contact the band secretary Andrew Brown on 01241 410284.

Tayport Branch of the Royal British Legion Remembrance Parade
The month of November has been a very busy month for the Carnoustie & District Pipe Band. The month started with the Band leading the Torchlight Parade in the town. For two of the Band’s youngest members, who are being taught at the weekly lessons which take place in the town, this was their very first parade with the Band and they played excellently on what was a very chilly night. The following Sunday, the Band was on show again, leading the Remembrance Parade for the Tayport Branch of the Royal British Legion. This was a new experience for the Band as it was the first time that it had led such a parade and Scott Phillips, the Pipe Major, had this to say:
“It is traditional for Pipe Bands to lead Remembrance Parades and we jumped at the chance to get out there and be part of it. Since being formed in 2008, we had never had the opportunity to participate in such an event and it has been a great experience for the younger folk in the Band. It was also great to have such a big Band out there, 25 pipers and drummers turned out on what was a wet and windy morning and I would like thank everyone who took part, including the 1st Monifieth Boys’ Brigade, for their assistance.”

The Band’s Debut into
the competition arena at Dunbar on the 8th of May 2010
The first Scottish outdoor contest of the 2010 Pipe Band Season was held at Dunbar, this saw the Band make its first ever appearance on the competition circuit. At this competition, which combined Grade 4a and 4b Bands, the Band gained a very respectable 11th out of the 23 entrants, which was a result that we had hoped for; this included an 8th placing from a piping judge.
This was a great achievement considering that this was the first time that 14 of our members had ever stepped foot on the competition field. The band notably also took the scalp of a number of established 4a bands despite being a new entrant Grade 4b band.
We are now looking forward to competing in the Scottish Championships in Dumbarton on the 22nd of May, where we will hopefully improve our standing.

DRUMMING
In the drumming sections, members of the Carnoustie band were equally as successfully. Kerrie Devlin won the drumming on the pad section, and Amy Forbes won the 15-18 years Novice Drumming.
Included in the prize for Amy's superb victory was a day of Grade 1 tuition for the whole drum corps, which is invaluable to the band!
In the tenor drumming section, prizes were awarded to Dhugal Paterson who came second and Caitlin Cameron who was fourth.
The Piper Major of the band, Scott Phillips, was delighted with the success of the pipers and drummers. "Everyone from the band who competed today gave excellent performances, and it just shows how much effort and hard work these youngsters put in. Coming away with a prize or two makes it worthwhile, and hopefully we can all continue to improve.
"The future of the band looks bright with all this young talent coming through!"
The band is always on the lookout for enthusiastic new learners as well as experienced old hands to help out.
If you are interested, you can come along to practice on Monday evenings at BURNSIDE PRIMARY SCHOOL, 7 to 9 p.m., or Wednesday evening's at Newton Panbride Church Hall, 7 to 9 p.m., or give the band secretary, Andrew Brown a call on 01241 410284.
